In continuation of our talk on Career in Education, we shall be looking at what educationists do. We saw in our immediate last post what the teaching career is about (should you take education as a career?).
Career in education as we noted, is both noble and rewarding. It encompasses the act and practice of imparting knowledge and skills with the intention of inducing
learning.

If you choose to take
a career in education, what it means is that, you choose to become a
professional teacher.

The works of a professional teacher include but not limited to:Teaching, learning assessment, research, curriculum development, administration and policy development.
You could teach at any educational level depending on
your qualification. People who qualify as NCE (National Certificate in Education) holders can teach in the Nursery,
primary or junior secondary schools. Degree holders however teach in secondary
schools. Higher qualifications like Masters and Doctoral degrees will qualify
you to teach in higher institutions like the polytechnics, universities, etc.
The latest development is that nobody teaches without a qualification in
education. i.e., those who already are teaching without any training in education
would have to go and earn at least a diploma in education (Postgraduate Diploma
in Education, PGDE).
Also,
since there are many areas of practice, you may choose to work with the
physically, emotionally or intellectually challenged individuals as special
educationist, educational psychologist, physical or occupational therapist or
social worker.
