There are many institutions in Nigeria that offer educational courses. These include: Colleges of Education, National Teachers’ Institute, Polytechnics and Universities. Universities and Polytechnics
have faculties of education and institute of education respectively; while, Colleges of Education and National Teachers’ Institutes are educationally owned institutions.

Colleges of Educations offer a three year programme leading to the award of National Certificate in Education (NCE). Students are required to study two subjects and education with other general studies. On completion, student teachers are mandated to undergo teaching practice in primary or secondary schools to qualify as teachers.
In colleges of Technology and Polytechnics, it takes a minimum of two years to obtain a National Diploma (ND), and another two years to obtain Higher National Diploma (HND). But this is not a teaching certificate, i.e., they are not professional teachers, they will only qualify as one after undergoing a one year educational programme in the form of postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE); taken to be equivalent of first degree.

In the university, period of study is normally four academic years to earn Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), Bachelor of Arts in Education [B.A (edu)], Bachelor of Science in Education [B.Sc (edu)] or Bachelor of Technology in Education [B.Ed (Tech)].
Admission Requirements
For admission into any of the branches of education, in the university, prospective students must possess credits in three subjects relevant to the branch of education where admission is being sought. Credit passes in English Language and in most cases Mathematics is required. Prospective candidates are advised to go through the current JAMB brochure for detailed information regarding their specific educational course of choice, the requirements and where the course is offered.
Entrance into any of the institutions is through the UTME, where a good performance is desirable with a high Post-UTME score. Those who possess NCE or ND or ‘A’ level passes in relevant subjects may gain admission into the university through the direct entry.
