CAREER IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION




Why is it that most multinational companies, well organized businesses owners and industries generally do well in their various enterprises? The secret is in business administration.

Business Administration, which is one of the social science courses like accounting, marketing, banking and finance, etc, could also be grouped under the management sciences. It is viewed as the life-wire of any organization as it deals with the interrelationship between human beings, accounting for the managerial oversight of business which to a very large extent determines success or failure in business enterprise.
The course aims at harmonizing managerial functions of planning, controlling, coordinating, directing and organizing of people and materials to meet organizational objectives.

Business administrators are trained and qualified in business administration. They often work as personnel managers and are in urgent and increasing demand in every organization. This is because as people are employed, they must be efficiently managed for good results. The personnel management office is also responsible for the payment of workers’ salaries, handles as well as process staff promotion, motivation, training, development and discipline.

Education and Training
Business Administration could be studied both in the polytechnics and in the universities. Those trained in the polytechnics earn National Diploma (ND) or Higher National Diploma (HND), while those trained in the university are awarded a Bachelors Degree.

The university education takes a minimum of four academic years while ND and HND run for two years each, one after the other with a period of one year industrial training in between.

To gain admission, credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Economics, Accounting, and any of Government or Commerce is required. The usual entrance examination is the UTME, where a high aggregate point is highly desirable with a very good performance in the Post-UTME screening. Having two ‘A’ Level passes chosen from Economics, Accounting, Government, Business Management, Geography or Statistics may qualify you for direct entry admission. Some polytechnics run Pre-ND programme which does not require UTME.

Prospects in Business Administration
Business Administrators are vast and very knowledgeable based on their training and exposure. They, therefore have very good job prospects. Anywhere business is run for profit and good result is a potential place for business administrator to work. These include: industries, companies, private business, banks, etc. They are employed in government services especially in the personnel management department. They also may choose to set up their own business which they usually manage well.

Personal Skills Required
Qualities required of Business Administrators include: forthrightness, problem solving skills, speed, people skills, proactiveness, good time management, ability to think and prepare in advance. Finally, Business Administration is very dynamic as such; versatility is highly required for one to be able to cope with the demand of the ever changing course in our ever changing world.
